Adsense Ads: Why Less Is More
by: Cody Moya © 2008
When it comes to placing AdSense ads on web pages, many people assume that the more ads are placed the more revenue will be achieved. This can be true, to a point, but at times placing too many ads on a single page can be counterproductive and actually cause a decline in ad revenue instead of an increase.

Part of the reason that less is often more is that Google will always put the top paying ads on the top and the lower paying ads on the bottom. Now, if you place a stack of three different ads with one on top of the other, the bottom ads may steal the attention of the viewers away from the potentially more valuable ads on the top. You could end up costing yourself lots of money by using a strategy like that.

In addition, placing too many ads can cause the web site to look cluttered and therefore unprofessional. We have all seen those web pages that are nothing more than a collection of ads and linking pages. Even though some of them may rank highly in search engine terms, web surfers are unlikely to stay at those sites after they have seen what they had to offer.

In order to make any serious money from AdSense, viewers have to find something of real value, like high quality content or quality products.

When placing ads, it is important that they look as much like a part of the web site itself as possible. This kind of placement and formatting helps to provide a consistent look and feel and provide web visitors with a more pleasant experience.

It is important, however, to keep in mind that Google will not allow web publishers to ask visitors to click on the ads, or to use deceptive practices to get them to click the ads. If you have good quality content and something to offer, however, you should not have to resort to tricks to make viewers click.

For instance, a web site that offers impartial reviews of consumer products can prompt visitors to click on the ads simply through the quality of the content being offered. The viewers will see the impartial nature of the reviews being provided, and they will naturally click the ads because of the trust they have gained.

Visitors will be likely to click the links to get more information, to search for the best prices, or to buy the products being advertised. The good content you provide on the web site in fact serves as a kind of endorsement, and in turn provides more credibility to the advertisers.
