Running With Your Business Blog

Hopefully, since last we spoke, I have been able to convince you of the huge potential sales increase a business blog can produce for your company.

Once you feel comfortable your business is ready to become part of the blogosphere - have its own business blog - it's important to remain focused and up-to-date on your company's business objectives, if you want to remain faithful to the blogging goals originally set out.

There are many outstanding blogs throughout the Internet with no other purpose than teaching the fundamentals of business blogging.

My suggestion: Study them voraciously before first getting started.

Some people prefer to learn on the fly, wing it, and then learn from their own mistakes.

Learning from your own mistakes can be extremely costly in time and money, and may ultimately result in irreparable harm to your business.

When you feel you are finally ready to step onto the playing field, do it with the help of several test blogs, especially, if you have never blogged before.

Test blogs can be as simple as small personal blogs not related to your business. Maybe showcase your hobbies, trade/profession, or even certain life experiences which could help others.

Personal blogs can be the best training ground available for hands-on experience and, who knows, a whole new exciting hobby may springboard from your efforts.

To further assistant your business blogging endeavors, here are a few more guidelines to follow:
  1. Study, study, study blog design. Pre-designed templates are also available if you opt to go with a paid blog service. But enlisting the services of a good web designer/graphic artist, will better allow you to design and build the blog to compliment the company's color scheme, identity, and uniqueness.
  2. Pick and choose your topics carefully. Be prepared with a line-up of topics that are in keeping with your business objectives. This will be a test of your flexibility and open-mindedness, since results could sometime end up going against the set objectives.
  3. There are certain safety measures to be aware of when blogging:
    • Sometimes legal issues can rear their ugly head, and a precaution would be to include disclaimers and limitations of liabilities.
    • Create blogging policies. Be steadfast and set limits on who gets to blog, and what information will be allowed to be made public.
  4. Avoid turning the blog into an outright marketing tool, and risk turning away your readers.
  5. Keeping content constantly updated, relevant, and fresh could be the most challenging aspect of business blogging.
  6. Complete at least 20 posts ahead of time in the event something unexpected prevents blogging on any given week. You want to give yourself plenty of room to maneuver, and planning ahead can help relieve those stressful periods.
  7. Monitor the coming and going of readers to your blog. Constantly check for changes, swings, updates which may occasionally point to certain trends, good or bad, then measure your results against expectations.
  8. Leave yourself enough flexibility to adjust to any quirks or trends which may suddenly occur unexpectedly. Fine tuning is an ongoing aspect of business blogging you will soon get used to.
  9. Learn to be fair, honest, and consistent with your topics, and the readers will grow to respect your professional integrity.
  10. Regularly schedule updates, and work hard to maintain the timelines you set. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday are considered the best days to update blogs, and readers will be mindful of your scheduled changes in anticipation of new material.

Once you have successfully launched your much anticipated business blog, then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

But do not get overly comfortable, you now have a lot of writing preparation ahead of you, timelines to meet, content to gather, and long nights of typing.
