A Great Idea For A Blog Is No Longer Enough
by: Shayne Genoway © Copyright 2006

How times have changed in a few short years. We now have a proliferation of blogs and web sites not only flourishing on the Internet, but running amok some might even say, and it has become increasingly clear that it no longer is enough to just come up with a good idea, alone, for your blog.

Attempting to make your blog stand out from all the others is the right approach, and the most difficult, if you want to succeed. It really makes very little difference whether you are new to blogging, or you are working at making an existing blog more user friendly and visitor attractive.

A fundamental principle to building and maintaining a grab-them-by-the-seat-of-their-pants blog is not only finding a niche you are comfortable with, but one which will capture the imagination and interest of the blogging community at large.

Fill a need and the people will come, and if you can fill a unique need in a way that no other blog is doing, then you will be on the road to carving out a lasting relationship with your readers that can carry on for a long time, as long as you continually keep them happy.

The can be a fickle group.

First timers quickly learn that setting up a blog is the easy part, attention to detail and filling it with sound, entertaining content, is the difficult part because it must be done as frequently as you can afford the time to work on it.

Daily, would be good. No one likes yesterday's news today especially when it concerns their own specific interests.

They will move the moment they get bored, restless, or feel they are being fed stale information.

It doesn't matter if it's blogs, websites, newspapers, television, it all hinges on one good idea, doesn't it, to make it all work?

But like every good idea, every great blog had to start somewhere, and many a blog changed direction mid-way through their existence because they were intelligent enough to see and read the trends their audience was following.

They saw something in the queries which continually came in, they noticed a trend that the readership had picked up on, and finally someone said.

"You know what, we might want to go along with this wave over here that seems to be building some momentum. Let's devote a lot more effort into this and see where it takes us."

You would be surprised if you knew how many of the big stars actually started out with different material than what you see on their blog right now.

You have to buck the system at times to be a good writer, even when it may ruffle some feathers or put the odd nose out of joint. It's doing what you have to do to stay alive, just be careful to know when to much is enough.

If you're wondering what I'm referring to, ask a couple recently well known radio and television personalities about how far is too far.

Not only do you have to watch for trends taking place right in front of you, but you have got to be part of it if you want to see where it will take you. If you prefer to ignore the trends, the questions your readers are asking, the rants and raves spewing all through the blogosphere, then you just might be passing up the big one right under your nose.

Do the same with other blogs out there, drop in, see what they are doing, especially read the feedback they are getting with the aim of picking up on something they may be missing. You could piggyback right off of the daily email gripes and bitching they are receiving, and fill that need for their readers. This is where you've got to be savvy, ever watchful, and learn to spot the trends visitors leave behind, and then swoop in for the kill.

You won't be surprised when I tell you then, that the blogs getting the most traffic are the ones that exhibit the biggest attitude, show the most personality, and even tend to go out on a limb once in a while. Well, golleeeee geeeee, isn't that a surprise.

The fiercely individualistic bloggers surfing the blogosphere are a unique demographic that especially respond strongly to personality quirks and oddities. Think of them as skateboarders riding a mouse.

The bottom line?

Try to give your audience what they want, not necessarily what they need all the time. Sometimes it can be that simple. Step outside the box if you must and dare to be different, unique, even off-the-wall, if that's what it takes.

Or you could just go about doing what everyone else is doing and (yawnnnnnn) be boring...
