Why Do I Need Opt-in Subscribers?
by: Shayne Genoway © Copyright 2007
There is a better than average chance your customers will become repeat purchasers
once they see that you provide quality products, outstanding service, and go the
extra mile for them in a professional, courteous manner.
Not only will they return as customers to buy again, but they will even
recommend you to friends and acquaintances who will gladly check you out
based on their recommendation alone.
This is a win-win situation for your website.
Before the increase in traffic starts to build as a result of the fantastic
service that will grow your business, insure your subscriber tools are in proper
working order to successfully build a strong opt-in subscribers list.
Opt-in subscribers are website visitors who have agreed to receive your
promotional materials whether it is a newsletter, catalogs, or simple product
updates.
To become part of your mailing list they have agreed to give you their
name and email address in order to receive your material, usually in exchange
for a free gift you had offered.
These promotional materials are sent by email to your opt-in members only, on a
regular weekly, monthly, or more frequent basis.
The bonus when using email for promotional material are the low costs of delivery.
Except for your time and effort in the preparation of the email, there
virtually are no costs.
You can't get much lower than that.
Email is free and if you are able to professionally prepare your own promotional
materials, your savings will be that much greater.
Opt-in subscriber lists pretty much became law when it was decided a method was
needed to stop those pesky unwanted spammers filling our email boxes everyday.
Asking potential subscribers to indicate they agree to receive your material
not only protects you from being labeled a spammer, but it gives the subscriber
a certain satisfaction the email they receive is a result of their own choosing.
Another more important benefit to having an opt-in list, is that you can pretty
much be assured that whoever requests your material is less likely to
delete anything you send, without first reading it.
Of course, by agreeing to receive your regular emails, these same subscribers
also have the right to unsubscribe from your mailing list when they feel like it.
This should be a simple and easy process they can enact at a moments notice,
without worry of recourse or problems of any kind.
I am always amazed at the little games some operators still insist on playing to
make "unsubscribing" deliberately confusing and difficult, all in an effort to
maintain their lists.
My only advice when this happens to you - beware. This obviously is not someone
you want to deal with.
If you, as a webmaster want to avoid the "unsubscriber" on your email list, then
strive to make your material interesting, relevant, and always up-to-date. Keep
them excited about receiving your weekly email, and above all else be on time
and keep sales pitches subtle, not in-their-face.
Your customers will grow to appreciate this style of email marketing. When they
see you work at being fair, honest, and consistent with them, they will reward
you with steady sales.
No insulting cheapies, please, when building your opt-in list and never, ever,
give away free out-dated material used by webmasters years ago.
People know when they are being conned, and offering a free ebook they have seen
ten times before on other websites shoots holes in your credibility.
Quality freebies, only, if you wish to impress your readers and keep them.
Building an opt-in list is one of the most important functions any webmaster
can undertake. Take your time, put some thought into it, and good luck.
