How To Get Your Visitors To Return and Stay Longer
by: Shayne Genoway © Copyright 2007

Visitors are dwindling to your site, and when they do come you notice they are not standing, nor returning. So what can be done about this worrisome trend?

Here are 10 highly effective strategies to encourage them to return and stay a bit longer.

1. Writing free articles, ezines, and reports with your included by-line at the end is a slower more reliable form of viral marketing. It can provide phenomenal results when done properly with up-to-date material, relevant facts, and is well written. Readers will then be enticed to check out your Website just to get more of you.

2. Joint Venture partnerships with other list owners and Webmasters has become extremely popular and a win-win situation for all participants. It is the new world version of you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours, a sort of business symbiotic relationship. Everyone gets along, everyone promotes each other using their own lists or websites, and everyone is happy because it does work remarkably well.

3. Every email that leaves my computer has my website address attached somewhere on the page. This is by far the most inexpensive way to promote your Website, and if it turns into a viral email it may travel the world three or four times. You know what I'm talking about, so get on it...now.

4. Okay, this isn't new but it still seems to be under-utilized by some websites, and I refer to exchanging Links with other websites. It is a proven fact search engines give more credence to incoming links to your site, and that these links are also an effective strategy for generating targeted free traffic to your website, so why are you not working it more?

5. A good link to your website can be your own Blog, either one or 101 of them which, I might add, you can ping to the Blog search engines, which is the fastest way to get the search engine robots to visit your Blog thereby in-turn attracting new visitors to your website. Has this been another lost opportunity?

6. If you haven't already done so, now is as good a time as any to start creating RSS feeds for your Website. Submit the feed URLs to the major RSS feed directories online, for instance http://www.guidetorss.com/ provides a list of the top RSS directories. Do not wait for something new to become old, get on the band wagon now.

7. Check out everyone else's blog, and be sure to leave comments, positive of course, whenever possible. Most Blogs encourage comments along with your URL, which means an automatic link back to your website. A few hundred of these one way links to your site could be good for search engine rankings. I never said any of this would be easy, well, did I?

8. Do you carry business cards with you? Is your website URL prominently listed on the card? It should be, along with any other stationary you might have printed up. I have a business card printed with nothing else on it but the URL to one of my websites. I leave them wherever I go, the theater, restaurants, airports, public transit, libraries, anywhere there's people traffic.

I do it because it works great, and people tell me they are so curious when they pick up my card that they cannot wait to get to a computer to check it out. Every little bit helps the bigger picture.

9. What about advertising your Website on your car, here's a fantastic idea that gets great results for me, and I'm not talking about one of those boring magnetic signs on the side of the car door, either. Have a sign painter do a nice classy unobtrusive URL on the rear of your car, you'd be amazed at the responses you may get.

10. I have recently seen someone signing up on various chats and game sites where a user name is required and they have put their Website URL as the user name. Different, but it does get their Website out in front of a lot of people.

Getting your Website, eBook, or eZine out to the masses is only limited by your imagination. Look folks, it's always about hard work, isn't it, in the end.

I mean, it won't work - none of this will work, unless you do.

Have fun with it.
